There are many ways to do research but generally I rush the growth option into the casualty post battle increase whilst also dumping all early game points into the same skill option. Just build PO buildings till it's positive. It's envitable for there to be rebellions due to the slave economy and forced taxation, you will have to do some turtling but you should still focus on securing provinces and going back to defend when a rebellion is immenient. Your first province shouldn't be too much of an issue, there isn't much that can contest Malekith and your black guards in a fight at that point in the game.
